Facts and Figures

Partnership:

BEUMER Group GmbH & Co. KG

iDTRONIC GmbH

Applications:

Automated identification for:

  • Baggage handling
  • Transport system
  • Container transport

Starting situation:

Equipping of new CrisBag® tote-based baggage transport and sortation system with ultra-high frequency RFID readers, antennas and transponders.

Beumer Group is an international manufacturing leader in intralogistics; specializing in the fields of conveying, loading, palletising, packaging, sortation and distribution technology. The company employs about 4,000 people in over 70 countries. Beumer’s acquisition of Crisplant a/s, a leading automatic sortation technology provider for airports, brought together two of the strongest brands in material handling and intralogistics.

The Challange

Beumer decided to invest further in the development of CrisBag®—a fast, flexible, tote-based baggage and transport system. For this, Beumer required reliable hardware in order to automate identification of the RFID tagged tote boxes. For the customer, it was very important to use a combination of synchronized reader and external antenna, which could handle uninterrupted tracking and tracing during peak usage with increased baggage volume.

Since the CrisBag® system is offered for sale worldwide, the challenge was to equip the reader for global deployment, while still facilitating region-specific frequency ranges and high security standards. Further requirements included low energy consumption, direct interface for systems integration, and easy to personalize firmware and software.

The Project

Beumer selected iDTRONIC’s industrial grade BLUEBOX RFID readers and antennas. These matched Beumer’s demanding requirements for a rapid and reliable identification of the individually monitored transport containers. To meet the requirements for bulk reading, the choice fell to the UHF frequency range and the BLUEBOX Advant MR reader with one channel and profibus interface.

For the external RFID antenna, they chose the Cylindrical Antenna M30. Both devices were designed to integrate into the existing Crisplant CrisBag® system by Beumer.

The Implementation

The project kicked off in 2005. Beumer a/s received the second generation of the industry approved BLUEBOX RFID readers and writers, being one of the first customers of the system. iDTRONIC’s device-independent software development kit (BLUEBOX SDK) provided the proper tool base for the in-house development of applications, as well as an easy integration into the newly developed system. Besides readers and antennas, iDTRONIC also provides Beumer with the suitable transponders. The built-in passive RFID tags in the baggage handling totes are optimized for the specific requirements of the BLUEBOX hardware. These tags are durable, do not require an internal power source, and are extremely cost-efficient.

The Benefits

  • Swift identification of a large number of containers / RFID transponders
  • Possibility of using multiple RFID transponders and standards parallel on one application (bulk reading)
  • Adjustable power output for individual adaption to system and environmental conditions
  • Designed for international use: frequency range and antennas can be adapted to local region
  • Direct connection to the PLC via Profibus interface
  • Easy installation with M30 thread antenna

Fazit

he BLUEBOX product family is available in various versions and with many interfaces. Depending on installation site and configuration needs, the number of devices can be scaled and combined together. At peak times, the iDTRONIC RFID readers capture up to 3000 baggage items in one hour. The BLUEBOX Advant readers are technically capable of processing up to 36,000 tags per hour. Even with steadily rising passenger and baggage volumes, they are well equipped for future expansion. The Beumer Group has been successfully installing CrisBag® at international airports for many years. Locations include Calgary, Munich, Helsinki, and Singapore. Most recently a system has been completed in Dusseldorf, Germany, during ongoing airport and flight operation.
