While RFID started its success for automatic access control in hotels and parking lots, using contact-less identification and decentralised data storage needed for payment systems is a fresh market.
But the capabilities of RFID NFC tags have largely improved over the last years for this demanding application:
- More memory for data storage of several applications on a single card (e.g. NFC mobile card stickers)
- More processing power on the RFID chip for added functions, encryption and data security
- More communication range in everyday environments (the real-world)
The main factor for success of RFID and NFC in payment systems will be the enhanced ease of handling for the customer.
